Vintage Vibes Nautical Style

Happy Tuesday, friends! One of my favorite ways to be inspired is to watch either classic movies or look at vintage fashion ads/photographs. The 1940s through the early 1960s has always been my favorite time periods, especially for fashion. When it comes down to it, I'm totally a vintage babe at heart. I know many of my friends on here are also! This look has a vintage flare with nautical style. Nautical looks catch my eye right off the bat. I'm always drawn to them, whether they be preppy or whimsical, though nautical styles tend to always lean more on the preppy side than anything else.

When re-creating a vintage inspired look, its important to not include too many vintage items or else you look dated, unless that's what you're going for! My hat is from an antique shop and actually a vintage item. The red lips and pearls also give off a vintage flair. Without the hat and pearls though, this look wouldn't be as vintage-y and would have a very more modern edge to it. It just goes to show how a few accessories can completely change an outfit!

This is technically a few days late, but these photos were taken on the first day of spring and surprise! It snowed 3-5 inches in North Eastern Pennsylvania, which if you live here is really no surprise at all. Winter lasts a minimum of seven months, sometimes longer. Sigh. I could really use some of that California sunshine right about now! I refused to dress for winter on the first day of spring so I pulled out my rain boots, rain jacket, a punchy peach colored dress, and my new satchel from Target. They have so many colorful purses right now that are absolutely wonderful. I would highly recommend stopping in at your local store to check out a few pieces. The only winter item I put on was my vintage hat because it was a bit frigid outside!

Happy Friday all! I hope everyone has had a good week and is looking forward to the weekend ahead. I know I sure am. Currently, Justin and I are in California enjoying some much needed sunshine and warmer weather, not to mention some rest and relaxation. This outfit puts the biggest smile on my face and makes my hurt burst with happiness. I love the navy and yellow mixed together along with that adorable peter pan collar. The sweater, skirt, and bag are all from Modcloth, but currently sold out. Everything feels oh so very vintage, the hat actually is, which only makes me fall even more in love with this. I really wanted an outfit that popped and reminded me of sunshine filled days. Enjoy your weekend love bugs <3

Stylishly Staying Warm

I must say, it has been quite cold here in the North East lately. Most days lately have reached below zero. I am so ready for Spring to get here! Until then, it's time to bundle up and try to stay warm. The leopard coat is vintage that my aunt found in Washington DC. It's from around the 1960s era, which only makes me love it even more! The leggings are Target and the black booties are Rock & Republic for Kohls. I usually do not wear items that have an "edgy" feel to them, but these were too cool to pass up and look great paired with anything black. The gloves come from Banana Republic Factory Store, and the earrings are replica Jackie Kennedy's, listed below. The glittery scarf from Mark does not provide any kind of warmth, but it is so gorgeous and instantly perks up any outfit. The black quilted bag, also from Mark, is great for being so versatile and just big enough to fit all of the essentials. Below are the exact earrings and similar items to replicate this look.

Happy Thursday everyone! The weekend is almost here and I know that makes me one happy girl. With that comes date night and the ever challenging question of what to wear? I was feeling a vintage mood, honestly when am I not??, and decided on this beautiful tulle dress from Target from a few seasons ago. Since the temperatures can dip quite low in the winter, I wanted to layer a shirt underneath and went with a polka dot pattern from LC Lauren Conrad. To kick it up a notch, I added this beautiful fascinator from Modcloth, pictured below, and my favorite leopard heels from Nine West, also pictured below. To complete the look, layers upon layers of pearls. The earrings are replica of Jackie Kennedy'sand pictured below.

There's something so festive and energizing about red during the winter and holiday season. It's one of my go to's when choosing an outfit, especially a party one. The eye-catching color and sparkly sequins are sure to get you noticed and stand out from the crowd. Of course, using a bright red lipstick felt appropriate. I read that heat signifying shades, like bright red, hot pink, orange, and yellow trigger energy levels. Wearing a lipstick, shirt, or dress in those shades during the winter keeps you feeling cheery and excited when feeling down from the dreary weather. I used gold as the neutral color, which pairs so well with red, in all of my accessories. A nice little vintage feather hat feels ever so classy without feeling too over the top.

It need not be said how much I truly adore this vintage inspired outfit. My heart expands two sizes just thinking about it. The look started with the skirt from Modcloth. As soon as I saw the skirt I knew I had to have it. Grace Kelly and Tippi Hedren instantly came to my mind from the wonderful creations of Edith Head while working with Alfred Hitchcock. The skirt is a sea-glass green soft wool blend with a matching belt. This midi style screams 1950s and is quite the eye catcher. To compliment the look I had in mind, I choose a chiffon green blouse with pearls attached from LC Lauren Conrad. The pearls add just the right amount of sophistication and glamor to the outfit. The jewelry was all about gold and pearls to keep the vintage vibe and also to replicate the specific image I had in my mind of the two leading ladies who inspired this look. To finish off the outfit, nude heels from LC and a brown top handle hand bag, which reminded me of Miss Hedren's ensemble. On a side note, what a beautiful Fall day it was to capture this lovely outfit. The air was warm and the leaves seemed to glow in the golden sunshine. Who's with me in not wanting Fall to end!

Hitchcock’s very own Edna Mode, Edith Head, created the green suit. It’s based on her own design for Grace Kelly as Lisa Fremont in Rear Window (1954) – a celadon green I-line suit worn with white halterneck blouse. The Rear Window fabric is completely different, shantung silk instead of wool, and the ensemble is comprised of a two piece jacket and skirt instead of a dress and jacket. The similarities come from Head’s insistence on simplicity; like The Birds’ suit it ages so well because there is little to date it. Hedren’s suit is shorter and boxier than Kelly’s, superficially ‘Chanel like’, though in fact most resembles couturier Digby Morton’s early work (circa 1950s), except in a less luxuriant fabric

Mellow Yellow

As you already know, I am a sucker for anything remotely nautical looking and this outfit fits right into that category. The creamy yellow top with lace detailing at the collar is from Lauren Conrad's line at Kohls as well as the blue and white stripped circle skirt. Both are light weight and the perfect summer pairs. To cap off the look, no pun intended, I wore my white vintage hat and blue and white shoes from Modcloth. The gold earrings and bracelet are from the Jackie Kennedy collection. I could wear this look all summer and never tire of it.

Summer Time Stripes

Beach Wear Approved

This quit essential summer outfit from Modcloth has it all. Seersucker, nautical stripes, and blue and green coloring all bring to mind an easy breezy beautiful summer day. I bought this dress last year for my families annual trip to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and I could not be more pleased with it. I added on a cream colored belt to cinch in my waist (always important to do!), a summery white hat, and of course wedges for walking around the boardwalk and not falling through the slats. Heels have their place, and I adore them dearly, but they are not appropriate for walking on a boardwalk, unless you want to fall through of course.

This shows the dolphin ring I have on. It was my mother's and possibly even bought down in Rehoboth Beach. She loved dolphins and would always be so excited to see them jumping in the air. It's the perfect compliment to any beach or summery outfit.

Basic Black

Ah, vintage clothing. Vintage anything really. This outfit of basic black and pearls could be taken right out of the 1950s. I love wearing my vintage hats out in public. I always get compliments and people saying how refreshing it is to see something so different from the norm. One woman told me that everyone looks so similar these days and that, though vintage, my look seems new and invigorating. I could not help but think of the famous phrase, everything old is new again. I could not agree more.

Demure Dame

The hair style was really quite east to make. First gather your hair into a low pony tail. Then, take the tail and make a hole right above the elastic band for the tail to go through. Keep repeating the process until you have the desired length and twist into the sides of your hair. Finally, roll up the remainder of the tail and pin into the hair.

I like old movies, screwball comedies, vintage clothes, and basically I’m an old-fashioned girl.

The Magical Ferris Wheel

Magical Ferris Wheel

A staple at every carnival and amusement park, the Ferris Wheel provides its riders with great spectacular views, sweet little romantic moments, or just a quick escape from the ground below. I have always been quite mystified by the giant wheel and its colorful cars carrying people into the sky and back. A few months ago I read the book "The Devil in the White City" written by Erik Larson. An absolutely fantastic read detailing the creation of the 1893 Chicago's World Fair along with a behind the scenes story of a serial killer running a muck. The tagline reads, "Murder, magic, and madness at the fair that changed America." If that does not catch your interest then I do not know what will! Quite an interesting history, I assure you. While reading the book I learned the story behind the creation of the great Ferris Wheel for the expedition. I found this to be fascinating since no one really ever stops to think about how this staple came to be. I was so thrilled to photograph it while Alison and I were on our Knoebels journey. See the previous post for more pictures from the park

Magical Ferris Wheel

A short summary from howstuffworks.com perfectly tells the story behind this mystical wheel. "For the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago, engineer George Ferris presented fair organizers with his idea of a giant rotating wheel that would carry passengers in cars attached around the outer edge. He convinced organizers to allow him to build the structure, which would rival France's Eiffel Tower. Indeed, Ferris's wheel, which cost $380,000 and stood 264 feet tall with a wheel diameter of 250 feet, was a huge success. Each car held 60 people, and, at 50 cents a ride, the wheel was one of the most popular attractions at the World's Fair. The Ferris wheel is a must-have for any carnival, and thousands of replications continue to delight passengers of all ages."

Nifty Nautical

One thing I simply cannot get enough of in summer is nautical fashion. Whether it's stripes, anchors, sailboats or whales, I can never get my fill of the wonderfully classic style. The colors of red, white and blue (how patriotic!) always feel fresh and have such a timeless feel to them. Some nautical fashions also incorporate black and gray into the picture. As soon as the warmer weather hits, I immediately pull all of my nautical clothes out of their storage and start piecing together my outfits. From dresses to t-shirts, this style can fit any age and style you wish. This dress comprises of the ever popular blue and white stripe with a rope textured belt. The red and gold chained bag is elegant and stays true to the nautical feel. The hat, vintage of course!, fits right in with its navy blue color. The shoes, I cannot say enough how in love I am with this pair, are a bright retro red with red jewels on them. After my recent visit to Cape Cod, I feel even more attuned with all things nautical. Truly a summer staple that always delights. Ships Ahoy!

I purchased this ring up in Hyannis on Cape Cod. It is a reproduction of a sapphire ring Jacqueline Kennedy owned. She purchased the ring on a summer trip to Europe in the 1970s. Round simulated sapphires sparkle at the center of this 24K gold-plated ring. Two rows of clear and dark blue Swarovski crystals form a stunning circular pattern.

Blush in Bloom

Lovely Lace

Recently I've been getting into vintage hats. I adore the delicate pink flowers on this one. It feels so feminine and fresh for Spring and Summer. To compliment the look I chose a blush lace dress with a vintage beaded clutch from my grandmother. The beading has little pink flowers on it. The broach is also vintage with pink rhinestones and a gold finish. I wanted the shoes to be more modern with the height and decided on a pair of nude color ones so they would blend in with the outfit. Notice the tips of the heels have little rhinestones on them. I wore this outfit to my friends baby shower since she is having a little girl, I can't wait to meet you little Madison!, and also, this would be perfect for a lunch date with friends or for some afternoon tea.

Vintage Blue

Blue and blush, need I say more? I've always had a certain love affair with this combination of colors. My mom even decorated our house in shades of blue and rose. The navy background of the dress lets the subtle blue and blush tones of the roses stand out, yet blend in perfectly together. The shoes I have on even color coordinate to the dress with their navy background and pink polka dots. The icy blue of the purse makes a nice neutral shade to stand against the dress and the jewelry all blends together beautifully with shades of gold and pink in them. What I really love about the outfit is the vintage look and modern feel it has. It's a balancing act between how much skin is showing really. The dress allows for a flippy skirt because the arm length is three quarters long.

A classic way to add polish to your handbag is to simply tie a scarf around the handles or chains. Voila! Instant sophistication.

I've always had a soft spot for this pair of shoes. The peep toe, ruffled bow, and pink polka dots against a navy background are reminiscent of the 1950s, yet have the heel height to bring them into the now. Simply adore them.
